Robbie Chapman is a caretaker at Regent High School

THERE were cheers – and laughter – as a professional boxer dubbed “The Camden Caretaker” unleashed a six-week secret on unsuspecting spectators on Saturday night.

The ringwalk entrance to a fight is often seen as the last chance to intimidate an opponent before battle.

But for middleweight ­Robbie Chapman, who juggles his training for the ring around working full-time as a caretaker at Regent High School in Somers Town, it was all about entertaining the fans.

The 24-year-old former St Pancras Amateur Boxing Association semi-finalist “played a blinder” when he danced into the boxing ring with broom in tow before taking on Callum Ide, sweeping along to the sound of MC Eksman’s song In Love. It got his supporters who packed Tottenham Leisure Centre in just the right mood.

“I’ve been trying to get ‘The Camden Caretaker’ name out there for a while now, so I came up with the idea of coming into the ring with my broom,” revealed Robbie, who lives in Chalk Farm. “I decided about six weeks ago that that’s how I was going to enter the ring, and I actually man­aged to keep it a secret from everyone. I didn’t tell my mum, my friends. Nobody knew, except for my agent. Usually I’m not good at keeping secrets, but I kept this one.”

He added: “Before a fight the part I’m looking forward to most is the ringwalk, the crowds cheering and the music. It’s about enter­taining everyone. I wanted to have fun, and for every­one else to have fun too. Everyone loved the entrance. They thought I played a blinder.”

Robbie, a popular figure around the Char­rington Street school, went on to make it two wins out of two in the professional ranks by recording a points victory.

“I actually enjoyed this fight more than my debut,” he said. “In my first fight I really felt under pressure. This time around I was a lot more relaxed. I’ve been work­ing a lot more on boxing with my trainer, Xavier Miller from IQ Boxing, instead of just fighting.”

Refusing to give away any secrets about his next ringwalk, Robbie added: “I’m hoping to return to the ring in December. I also want to thank every­one for getting behind me, including staff and pupils at Regent High.”
